Meet our lesson horses!

ZEUS
2000, 15.1hh Sorrel Quarter Horse gelding

Zeus likes to jump, and will jump anything from any distance without overjumping. He can canter into a jump and land at a trot even. Lots of our intermediate riders love to jump him. He is not for our beginner riders, as he can get fast and unbalanced at the canter. He is the first horse to great you in the field, and loves attention.
STERLING
1994, 14.2hh Gray Arab mare

Sterling loves to jump and does her changes, but needs a rider that will allow rather than make her to do her job. The more experienced riders love her spunk as she has a very adjustable stride and will reward when they do things correctly and let them know when they don't. She is not sure why she lives out in the field with unsophisticated horses when she prefers people.
HUNTER
1989, 14.3hh Chestnut Arab gelding

Hunter is very willing and sensitive enough to respond easily to our smaller students. He feels he has been a lesson horse long enough that he shouldn't be required to jump big jumps anymore and does a great job teaching the beginners now. He won't jump if the students fall on his neck, so teaches them to keep their heels down and look up.
CANDID
1998, 16hh Chestnut
Thoroughbred gelding

Candid sometimes gets a bit excited about his job, but usually matches his riders energy level well. He is used for confident beginners on the flat all they way up to our intermediate jumpers. He is smooth to ride. He is the horse in the field you will often see playing with the other horses or stick. Sometimes his riders have to remind him that its not play time with other horses in the barn or arena.
RORI
1989, 14.2 hh Bay Arabian gelding

Rori enjoys his job teaching beginners to ride and jump. He is small so often ridden by the younger kids. He is very good natured, but sometimes thinks he should just do things his way if its taking too long to get his bridle on or the students steering is confusing.
DAISY
1980, 14.1hh Chestnut Morgan mare

Daisy is our energizer pony. She just keeps on going. She was a pony club horse when she was younger but you would never know she was old watching her now. She still teaches beginner riders to canter and jump, and wants to make sure they can steer, so will cut the corners if they don't.

The following horses have been kindly leased to us for our lesson program

For Lease!

CARMEL
2001, 15.1 hh Palomino Paint mare
(Lisa Friedenberg)

Carmel has lots of western training and nothing phases her. She will jump if rider gets her going. She does expect riders to steer with a neck rein and leg, not just pulling her nose around. Beginners have to work hard to make her move sometimes, but as long as they don't give up she cooperates.
HARLEY
1986, 15.2hh Palomino gelding
(Lisa Friedenberg)

Harley has done just about everything before becoming a lesson horse. He is mainly ridden by beginners as he only does the mimium asked of him, but still perks up when jumping and doing gymkhana. He is a smart guy and will always fix his lead in the corner.
FOXY
2000, 15hh Buckskin Quarter Horse mare
(Lisa Friedenberg)

Foxy is almost too smart to be a lesson horse. She requires riders to move slowly around her head or they won't be able to catch or bridle her. She doesn't like it when riders jump ahead or get left behind so although she has jumping experience, she is now mainly used for our beginners and intermediate flat riders as she has a reining background. She is smooth and has a very slow and steady jog and canter, but is not hard to get going. She will take over though if she doens't feel the rider giving her enough direction.
FASHION
2001, 15.2hh Bay Tobiano Paint mare
(Lisa Friedenberg)

Fashion was trained English and Western and then did a few years of 3' Jumpers before becoming a lesson horse. She is starting to enjoy the beginner riders, but mainly does jumping lessons.
CREME
2000, 15.2hh Palomino
Quarter Horse Mare
(Lisa Friedenberg)

Creme is used for all levels of riders as she will steer easily and jumps anything from any distance without overjumping and will set the correct pace and do her lead changes. She is likely one of the first horses riders will learn to jump on.

XENA
1999, 16hh Bay Saddlebred
-Appaloosa mare
(Lisa Friedenberg)

Xena is a big solid mare that will happily pack a small or large rider. She only jumps them if rider asks, and otherwise has no problem trotting a 2' jump. She doesn't take off long to the jumps so is great to learn to jump and a good confidence builder. She doesn't like other horses too close to her, but seems to do fine with a rider that pays attention and doesn't get her boxed in.
PEPPY
2000, 16.2hh sorrel
overo paint gelding
(Lisa Friedenberg)

Peppy used to be a 3 day event horse but has some arthritis in his feet which has limited his abilities now so we bought him for lessons, as he still does a great job teaching beginner riders and jumpers. He has a nice slow smooth canter to teach people when he is on the rail alone, but when he gets out with lots of other horses, likes to try to catch up to the horse in front of him if his rider doesn't circle him and remind him he needs to pay attention.
SCOUT
1995, 15.2hh grey Arab
x Tennessee Walker gelding
(Margarita Romanchuk)

Scout does mainly beginner lessons and dressage. He doesn't like jumping much, but is willing to go over small jumps for a rider that steers him well. He is very smooth and only puts out as much effort as required as he feels the rider should be working at least as hard as him. He is a great horse to gain confidence on.

For Lease!

PETE
1987, 16h.1h chestnut TB Gelding
(New Horizon Ranch)

Pete was rescued from the meat buyers at auction a few years ago. He is healthy and sound and has been offered a second chance at life, teaching riders to jump. He is brave and has a nice smooth effortless jump. Although he is a big horse, he is cooperative for even our smallest riders.
CRYSTAL
1985, 16hh chestnut Saddlebred mare

Crystal used to be a pony club horse. She loves to jump, but not to stop. She is finally realizing that our riders will pull her into a circle if she doesn't stop, so is slowing down easier now. She has a very smooth steady canter so is liked by our intermediate riders. She doesn't like other horses much in the barn or arena, but as long as the riders don't get her boxed in, she does just fine.

For Lease!

RAZ
1996, bay 3/4 Arab,
1/4 Trakhener mare
(New Horizon Ranch)

Raz loves to jump but is also suitable for beginners as she is very steady on the flat. Sometimes you need a treat to catch her. She can teach riders to jump and do lead changes and is a great confidence builder since she rarely stops at a jump.

For Lease!

GIACCO
1996, 14.2hh sorrel overo
Paint gelding
(New Horizon Ranch)

Giacco is a big horse on short legs, although he looks quite proportional. Riders forget how close they are to the ground after riding his big stride. He is very willing and likes to go, but is a bit particular as to who rides him. Some beginners love him, but he does need a confident rider, especially for jumping.

For Lease!

MICKEY
1999, 16.3hh Bay TB gelding
(Lisa Friedenberg)

Mickey is our newest lesson horse (Jan 2011). He was previously used as a 3' hunter and it was recommended he not jump as high due to some arthritis developing in his hocks. So far he is fitting in great with his steady canter and has no problem jumping up to 2'6" with his long legs. He is a little pushy, so will be ridden by our older, more experienced riders until he settles into the barn routine. He should be able to teach riders for many years.
